What is microsuction?

Microsuction is an ear wax removal technique which uses a fine low-pressure suction device to remove any ear wax obstruction. It is considered to be one of the safest methods to clear the ear.
The nurse treating you looks in your ear using magnifying lenses called 'Loupes'. A gentle suction device is then used to clear the ear, without the use of water, and some noise from the machine can be expected.

Irrigation (syringing)

Under certain circumstances it may be a necessary to use irrigation (traditionally known as syringing). This will be assessed and discussed at the appointment.

Pre-treatment wax softening (optional)

If the wax to be removed is hard / compacted, then you may feel some discomfort. It would be advisable for you to add olive oil drops or olive oil spray to your ear(s) 5 days prior to the appointment.
Please click here for an NHS information sheet on how to administer olive oil drops yourself at home.

About ear wax

Ear wax is a normal substance the body produces to clean, lubricate and protect the lining of the ear canal by trapping dirt and repelling water. It is only when a build up and hardening of wax becomes a nuisance that you may need help with clearing your ear canals.
Having blocked ears can be an unpleasant experience and can cause hearing problems, lead to infections and sometimes make you feel dizzy. Excess ear wax can also be the cause of impaired function of your hearing aids. Your hearing aid technician may recommend that you have your ear canals cleared prior to your appointment.
